Understanding Components
A component is a discrete function or part of a system that can be impacted by an event.
Component status
The status of a component indicates its current performance or availability. The status of a component is defined as:
Operational: The component is working as expected with no issues.
Degraded Performance: All functions delivered by the component are working, however performance issues are being experienced e.g. extended wait times.
Partial Outage: One or more functions delivered by the component are not available.
Major Outage: All functions delivered by the component are not available.
Under Maintenance: The component has been deliberately taken out of service in order to complete maintenance e.g. installing updates, relocating equipment.
Understanding events
Event Types
An event is any known or unknown condition with a component that can impact its expected performance or availability. Events are classified as the following:
Incident: An incident is any type of event that was not planned.
Maintenance: This is an outage that was planned in advance.
Event Status
Events progress through a standardised workflow to ease communication with consumers of the system.
The statuses of the event are defined as:
Investigating: An issue has been reported to the Information Systems team for review and replicated successfully.
Identified: The root cause of the issue has been identified; development of a fix is underway.
Monitoring: A fix for the issue has been deployed; the component is being monitored to confirm the fixes effectiveness.
Resolved: The fix has been confirmed as a successful resolution to the issue.
Viewing the status of components
Current events that impact the system status are displayed at the top of the screen, immediately below the logo.
These same updates also appear in the system overview further down the page, shown below:
N.B. Note the Degraded Performance and Under Maintenance statuses against the two components.
